Cultivating Social Emotional Learning at Radians School

At Radians School, we believe that education must go beyond academics. Preparing students for the future also means helping them understand themselves, develop healthy relationships, and recognize the strengths that exist within them and within others. Social Emotional Learning plays a vital role in this process, helping students build confidence, empathy, and a strong sense of character.

As part of this commitment, our school community recently celebrated SEL Day through intentional class meetings designed to strengthen students’ self awareness and reinforce the importance of character education.

During the first period, homeroom teachers guided students through meaningful activities that encouraged reflection and positive peer interaction. One of the activities, Drawing with Our Hands, invited students to reflect on their own personal virtues. Each student received the outline of a hand and wrote a different strength, characteristic, or virtue on each finger. The exercise helped students identify the qualities that define them, reminding them that each person possesses unique gifts that contribute to the community.

Another powerful moment came through the activity Virtues Walk, where students had the opportunity to stand at the center of the classroom while their classmates shared affirmations and positive words that recognized their qualities. As students spoke about the virtues they saw in their peers, the classroom atmosphere filled with encouragement, respect, and genuine appreciation. These moments reinforced the idea that every student has value and that recognizing the good in others strengthens the entire community.

Activities like these reflect the heart of Radians School’s philosophy. Our mission to forge, educate, and promote integral citizens requires that we intentionally cultivate character alongside academic excellence. When students learn to identify their strengths, celebrate the virtues of others, and support one another, they develop the social and emotional skills necessary to navigate challenges and build meaningful relationships.

SEL Day served as a reminder that strong communities are built through kindness, respect, and encouragement. By creating opportunities for students to reflect on who they are and how they contribute to those around them, we continue to nurture a school culture where every student feels valued, supported, and inspired to grow.
